In the footsteps of Genghis Khan

MULTIVISION LECTURE

Alone on a motorcycle through Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Mongolia to China

The legendary Genghis Khan, who was even sung about in German pop songs, united the princes of Mongolia in 1190 and laid the foundations for the largest contiguous world empire that has ever existed. The Mongol armies conquered large parts of Asia and the so-called Golden Horde advanced as far as eastern Europe.

I traveled by motorcycle across the former world empire of the Mongolian prince, searching for traces of the past and experiencing the present of the people: in Ukraine, before the country was marked by war, in Kazakhstan, which is barren in terms of landscape but rich in oil and natural gas, and even in the People’s Republic of China, which is still closed to individual tourists with their own vehicle. The heart of what was once the world’s largest empire, however, is Mongolia. The still sparsely populated nomadic country is a small, culturally
independent island, caught between the “white, former communist Russia” and the “yellow People’s Republic of China”.

Along the way, I met many people in different countries who shared precious moments of their lives with me.

24,000 kilometers –
a gripping travelogue

Poland, Ukarine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia – the overland route from Germany to China is a real challenge. And you can’t really get into the land of the Red Dragon with your own vehicle. If you do, then only with a state guide. But Doris Wiedemann finds a way, drives alone and reports in this book about fascinating encounters and the culture that is so foreign to us.

“My most intensive journey to date: interesting, exciting, challenging and enriching.”
